I haven't posted this story yet because it was still too raw to 'put out there'. Alas, enough time has passed for me to fully realize the humor in the circumstance.
Did I just say "alas"? I'm not sure what came over me. I feel better now.
Anyway, the story starts Tuesday morning after dropping Mara off at preschool. The setting is the parking lot of Mara's preschool. And the characters are one dorky mom and two little girls.
Ok, here goes the story....
I was standing in the parking lot talking to a friend. I had strapped Becca in her
carseat, and Emily was sitting in my seat 'driving'. I finished my conversation and got Emily into her seat.
Now I have to tell you about the stupidest feature on my van. When you push the button to lock the doors but the doors are open, nothing happens. But the doors lock a few seconds after the doors are shut. I need to write to Chevy about exactly how stupid that feature (if you can call it a feature) is.
So on with the story... I got Emily into her seat. She was mad at me because I got her baby's head under the
seat belt while buckling her up so she was screaming "you hurt my baby" at the top of her lungs. I was so grateful that I could shut the door on her and have ten seconds of silence while I walked around to my door.
That silence was
interrupted by the sound of the doors locking. That would be the sound of the doors locking with my keys sitting in the front seat and two little girls buckled into their
carseats.
Evidently Emily had locked the doors while she was sitting in my seat, but they didn't lock until I shut the door.
I honestly think that my heart stopped for a minute. Luckily...no not luckily...thank you Jesus that my friend had not driven off yet, that my friend just happened to still have a key to my house that she should have given back to me weeks ago, and that my husband left his keys to the van at home that day. So I drove my friend's van to my house to get the extra key to the van and rescue the girls!
The story has a happy ending but I think I lost at least a year of my life in the mean time. It's been one of those weeks....is it Friday yet?
